Grounds Maintenance: A Tradition of Versatility and Craftsmanship Since 1999

Established in 1999, Grounds Maintenance began as a small but dedicated operation, taking on a range of contract maintenance work across the seasons. From routine grass cutting and hedge trimming to maintaining coastal steps across Lulworth Ranges, small scale fencing projects, and general landscaping, the business quickly built a reputation for reliability and high quality service during the busy summer months.

It wasn’t long before the company ventured into Hedgelaying, a traditional rural craft that soon became a central focus of the business, particularly during the winter season. Each year, as the summer drew to a close, founder Russell would shift his attention from grounds maintenance to long winters of Hedgelaying, honing his skills and building a solid reputation in this specialized field.

Come summer, like many skilled hedgelayers, Russell diversifies his work again. His summer work is wide ranging and reflects his broad skill set. This includes:

  • Grass cutting and general grounds maintenance

  • Path strimming and clearance

  • Quad bike work for access and maintenance

  • Small dry stone wall repairs, backed by a Level 1 Certificate in Dry Stone Walling

  • Chipper work

  • Assisting other firms with a wide variety of tasks—on land and even on water

Russell holds a Powerboat Level 2 (PB2) Certificate, making him an ideal choice for work on canals, lakes, and coastal areas. Whether it’s assisting with aquatic vegetation control, transport, or maintenance, his versatility extends beyond the land.

A passionate advocate for traditional Hedgelaying, Russell also spends part of the summer season attending rural shows and events. Here, he demonstrates his craft to the public, helping to promote and preserve this ancient skill. He is always open to quoting for new hedging projects and takes pride in every job he undertakes, large or small.

Grounds Maintenance continues to offer a rare combination of dependable seasonal services and timeless rural craftsmanship—adaptable, skilled, and rooted in tradition.
